Kite Zone School - Kitesurf school - The spots

Hourtin-Carcans, the largest freshwater lake in France

Lake Hourtin Carcans Maubuisson is the largest natural freshwater lake in France: it stretches 18 km long and 5 km wide.
Surrounded by dune forests to the west, it is linked to the Arcachon Basin by Lake Lacanau and a series of canals.
Its natural environment is particularly preserved (wild marshes, white sand dunes and forest). We practice a multitude of nautical activities: stand up paddle, kitesurfing, kiteboarding, sailing, windsurfing, dinghy, catamaran ...

The school's Kitesurf area:

On the eastern shore of the lake, an area reserved for practice is used by the school for your kitesurfing courses:
the school has its feet in the water on Lachanau beach, a spot exposed to the prevailing winds, with thermals of 2 to 5 beauforts: certainly the best spot in Aquitaine and the South-West for learning to kitesurf .
The area is suitable for beginners due to its shallow depth even more than 100 m from the edge. The bottom is clean without difficulty. Calm, shallow water and a steady wind are the key to effective learning, both in group and private lessons.

One area for all levels:

  • beginner / intermediate / advanced
  • No tide, no waves, shallow water, it's a lake
  • No navigation bans (see prefectural decree below)
  • No danger

Wind direction for kiteboarding:
  • North
  • South
  • South West
  • West
  • Northwest

The kite area is regulated by prefectural decree available ici.
It is delimited by a set of yellow and round buoys forming a rectangle of 2km by 900m.
It is exclusive to the practice of kitesurfing, kitefoil, kitewind, and windsurf.

KZS uses the wakeboard area on the western part of the lake, for learning to kite behind a motor boat.
